Description
Reproduction photograph Giuseppe Garibaldi: b. 1807 d. 1882. Italian general, politician, and patriot, considered one of Italy's fathers of the fatherland. He always acted in behalf of legitimate power, and duly constituted authority. His primary aim was the unification of Italy. During the American civil war president Abraham Lincoln offered him a Major General commission in the United States Army. Garibaldi had the inclination to accept the offer on one condition, that the wars objective be declared the abolution of slavery. At that stage of the war Lincoln was unwilling to make such a declaration, fearing an agriculture crisis
would ensue. After the emancipation proclamation was issued in august of 1863, Garibaldi wrote to Lincoln: " Posterity will call you the great emancipator, a more enviable title, than any crown could be; and greater than any treasure "
